Biographical / Historical

Missionary to the Philippines, Administrative Secretary of Europe and the Belgian Congo.

1980 IM press release:

The Rev. Dr. James L. Sprigg, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, has been named the European representative for International Ministries, in an announcement made to the Board by executive director, Dr. Chester J. Jump Jr. He expects to begin his duties by the fall and will be based at Rushchlikon, Switzerland.

Dr. Sprigg is no stranger to the Board or to Europe as his past experience with International Ministries gave him a thorough knowledge of the churches in that region.

He began his service with International Ministries as a missionary to the Philippines from 1948-1956. From 1956-1961 he served the American Baptist Foreign Mission Societey as Secretary to the Congo and Europe. He left IM for the pastorate, serving two churches in Livingstone and Missoula, Montana, consecutively over a period of four years. He returned again to International Ministires in 1965, serving as head of the Overseas Disision and representative for Europe. In 1973, Dr. Sprigg once more returned to the parish ministry serving his present church.

At Rushlokon, Dr. Sprigg will have opportunity to teach at the Baptist Seminary. He will take over the position from Dr. Denton Lotz, who has had an invaluable ministry in Europe.
