Biographical / Historical

Harold W. Smith was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and received his BS at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1907. He taught at Iowa State University and while there received his Master’s degree. Hulda Keller, born in Switzerland, was recognized as a missionary upon her marriage to Harold W. Smith in August 1911. Harold had been appointed in March of that year and they sailed in September. After arrival in Rangoon, their first assignment was to Mandalay where Hulda taught in the high school. She was involved in WCTU activities and the supervision of the guest house. Their second term was at Bhamo where she had charge of the girls’ dormitory and sewing classes. Their last period of service in Burma was spent in Rangoon where Harold was superintendent of the Mission Press and the Principal of the Cushing High School, as well as field secretary and Mission Treasurer. He was a prominent member of the Rangoon Municipal Cooperation and of the Rangoon Trades Association. Mrs. Smith relieved missionaries on furlough at Myitkyina and Kukhai Kachin Bible Training School and did publicity work for the entire Burma field. Her book of Daily Readings in the Kachin language was widely used for family worship among Kachin Christians. Hulda resigned in 1940.
