Biographical / Historical

Herbert Kirby was born near Liverpool, England, baptized in West Philadelphia, and ordained in Gauhati, Assam, India. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and was appointed a missionary in 1901. He married Mary Ella in 1906 and they arrived back in India by 1907. The Kirbys served in Assam from 1906 to 1954 and they founded and worked in the leprosy colony. They also traveled to the villages to care for more. Herbert served as secretary for Assam and Bengal for the Medical Missionary Association of all India. In 1948, he was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind medal by the British government. They retired in 1940. Their work at the leprosy colony was continued by their daughter Mary Kirby Berry.
