Biographical / Historical

Born in Boston, Joseph Gilmore received a BA and an MA from Brown University, and he attended Newton Theological Institution in 1861. After being ordained in the Baptist minister in 1862, he became pastor of a church in Fisherville, New Hampshire. Later he was private secretary for his father, who was governor of New Hampshire. He was also editor of the Daily Monitor in Concord, New Hampshire, pastor in Rochester until 1867, and then professor of Hebrew at Rochester Theological Seminary. In 1868 he became a professor at the University of Rochester, a position he held until 1908. He authored the hymn “He Leadeth Me’ in 1862.

David Chandler Gilmore was born in Rochester, New York. He was a graduate of the University of Rochester. In 1887, he entered the School of Library Economy of Columbia University, and the following year he became librarian of the Railroad Branch of the YMCA, New York. He then decided to become a missionary and was appointed in July 1890. He sailed for Rangoon, Burma in October. He married Gertrude P. Clinton in 1891. She had been appointed to the Rangoon Baptist College, now Judson College, by the Woman’s Missionary Society. When the Normal Department of the college was opened, he taught the first Normal classes. When the College was affiliated with the university of Calcutta he was the first occupant of the Chair of Pali. In addition to those duties, he started the Sgaw Karen Sunday school paper and brought out the first book of Gospel songs in Sgaw Karen. Gilmore also published a Sgaw Karen grammar book. In 1899 the Gilmores took charge of the Henzada station where work was done in reorganizing the mission school. In 1906 the Gilmores returned to Judson College where, in 1909, he was appointed Vice-President, and he was elevated to President in 1917. Dr. and Mrs. Gilmore returned to the U.S. in 1921. In recognition of service in the field of education in India, the British government awarded Dr. Gilmore with the Kaisar-i-Hind gold medal in 1922. Gilmore also served the Karen Theological Seminary and accepted the presidency of Bishop College, in Marshall, Texas.

Jean Crawford received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1940.
