Biographical / Historical

Harry Marshall graduated from Dartmouth in 1900 and Newton Theological Seminary in 1903. He was appointed to missionary service in 1903 and sailed that year in November for Burma. Emma Waldo Smith Marshall was born in Rangoon, Burma on May 11, 1879. Her father, Dr. D.A.W. Smith, was then beginning his forty years’ presidency of Karen Teleological Seminary. She graduated from Vassar in 1900 and had a year of training for the mission field at Newton Theological Institution before joining her parents in Burma. She became a scholar in the Karen language and for years wrote the Sunday school lessons, supervised the revision of the Karen bible, and revised the hymnology of the Karen churches. At Newton, she met Harry I. Marshall and when he finished his course 2 years later, he joined her in Burma, where they were married in the Karen Seminary chapel by Emma’s father. In 1920 they took up the administration of the Karen Theological Seminary. In 1936 the Marshalls were assigned to Toungoo, but were forced to leave in 1942 when the Japanese invaded Burma. On the trip home, she developed a blood disease and died Jan 24 1943. She was the granddaughter of “My county ‘Tis of Thee” author Samuel Francis Smith.
