Programs, articles, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia from Whitaker's pastorate of the Calvary Baptist Church, Rochester, New York, and Pilgrim Baptist Church, St. Paul, Minnesota; one file is of special interest because of Whitaker's involvement in civil rights issues, particularly in the wake of Rochester's 1964 race riots.

Biographical / Historical

Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Whitaker was born and educated in Malden, Massachusetts. He entered the Army, served under General George Patton and received four battle stars and several other citations before being honorably discharged in 1946. In 1948, he married his life long friend Virginia Carter at Union Emmanual Baptist Church in Malden. Whitaker graduated from Gordon College, Harvard Divinity School, and then receved both his STM and DMin degress from Andover Newton. While serving in Rochester, New York, He wrote the book Anatomy of a Riot, about the 1964 summer riots in that city. He served many years for the American Baptist denomination in Massachusetts and New York, and was the first African American Executive Minister appointed in the ABC-USA. Whitaker died in 2007.
