Scope and Contents

This collection consists of correspondence, coursework and educational materials, published and unpublished writings, biographical materials, sermons, conference materials, addresses and presentations, and memorabilia and mementoes that document the life and work of Dodie Younger. Particularly well documented in this collection is Younger's work with women in ministry and with ecumenism, as well as her association with Yale Divinity School.

Biographical / Historical

Doris Anne (Dodie) Hill Younger, a daughter of Chester and Esther M (Peters) Hill, was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on June 30, 1924. She was married to George Dana Younger, with whom she had four children: Judith Anne Younger Laspesa, Dana Reed, Stephen Peters, and Samuel Hill. She was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a B.S. degree in Education in 1946; and at Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy, where she received a diploma in 1947. In 1950 she received her M.Div. degree from Yale Divinity School; and in 1978 she earned the D.Min. degree from New York Theological Seminary. Dr. Younger was a faculty member of two institutions: 1) College for Human Services, New York City, 1967-1979; and 2) Kennedy King College, Chicago, 1972-1976. She served as an executive of three organizations: 1) American Baptist Women, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1976-1983; 2) General Director of Church Women United, New York City, 1983-1989; and 3) Interim Director of American Baptist Commission on the Ministry, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1990-1991.
