Biographical / Historical

Emery Andrews was an American Baptist minister who served Japanese communities in the United States and Japan. Andrews pastored the Japanese Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington, from 1919 until 1942, when the United States began incarcerating persons of Japanese descent following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In September 1942, Andrews moved with his family to Twin Falls, Idaho, in order to continue his ministry to members of his Seattle congregation, most of whom had been sent to the Minidoka relocation center in Hunt, Idaho.

In 1945, Andrews and his family returned to Seattle and reopened the Japanese Baptist Church. During the summers of 1949 and 1951, he worked as a volunteer for "Houses for Hiroshima," a private relief organization established by Quaker pacifist and author, Floyd W. Schmoe, to rebuild homes for victims of the atomic bomb.

Andrews retired from the ministry in 1959. In 1970 the Emperor of Japan awarded Andrews the Fifth Order of the Sacred Treasure. He died of a heart attack in 1976.
